Apprenticeship Opportunities

SkillBridge

The Department of Defense’s SkillBridge program is an opportunity for Service members to gain civilian work experience through industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service. For industry partners, SkillBridge is an opportunity to access the world’s most highly trained and motivated workforce. Service members participating in SkillBridge receive their military compensation and benefits, and industry partners provide the training and work experience. Separating Service members can be granted up to 180 days of permissive duty to focus solely on training full-time with approved industry partners after unit provides written authorization and approval.

Career Skills Program

The Department of Defense’s Career Skills Program under the SkillBridge initiative prepares Airmen to transition from military to civilian employment. SkillBridge programs are vocational and technical training programs that focus on the application of skills, which can lead to employment in a specific career or trade. Several companies and training providers have already set up SkillBridge training programs. The programs established by these companies are helping service members from all branches of the military to transition to civilian careers. To obtain more information about career skills training opportunities, contact your local base education office.

Entrepreneurship

Boots to Business

Boots to Business is a 2-step entrepreneurship training program offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as a track within the Department of Defense’s Transition Assistance Program (TAP). This course is open to Service members and their spouses who are interested in self-employment opportunities. The curriculum aids those interested in exploring business ownership by leading them through the critical steps for evaluating business concepts and providing the foundational knowledge required to develop a business plan. Participants are introduced to SBA resources that are available, including access to start-up capital, technical assistance and contracting opportunities. After completing Boots to Business, participants will have the tools and knowledge they need to identify a business opportunity, draft a business plan, and launch their enterprise.
